Stevens was an author, photographer and pilot. He devoted 15 years to research of this amazing work. He flew to every corner of Alaska in both large and small planes. The two books combine for over 1095 pages with more than 980 rare photographs. "He went through old archives but found conflicting accounts, so he went and interviewed surviving relatives," said his youngest son, Robert A. Stevens. "His personal relationships and reputation led many to give up unpublished log books and photo collections." Laid in is the publisher's brochure announcing publication of this two volume set at $150.00. The first two volumes, "Alaskan Aviation History 1897-1930," starting with the use of hot-air balloons, were published in 1990. Stevens was working on later volumes at the time of his death (2003) but lacked the funds to publish after selling only 1,500 of the 6,000 copies of the first two volumes he had printed, his son said.
