Translated into English from the original German by Henry Smith FRCS, "Microscopical researches into the accordance in the structure and growth of animals and plants" is a treatise by Theodor Schwann which was the first to officially formulate the basis of the cell theory. In it he declares that his "Microscopical Investigations into Conformities in the Structure and Growth of Animals and Plants" that the cell is the universal unit of life throughout the animal and vegetable kingdom.

Hard cover. Professionally re-cased using original covers and end papers. Blind stamped green cloth with gilt crest to front and new paper spine label. Octavo. [xx] 268pp. 6 engraved plates. Top edge gilt. Schleiden's  "Contributions to Photogenesis" forms the last seventy pages of the book. Bookplate of George A. Piersol M.D. to front pastedown along with his signature at the top of the title page dated 1883. Heirs of Hippocrates 1754. Printing and the Mind of Man 307b, Grolier 100 Famous 62.

Cell theory was a keystone of modern biology and, with its advent, the biological sciences began a rapid ascendancy.
