London, Fisher Son and Co., 1836-37, Half Leather
Good
The finely engraved plates depict biblical sites, city views, and landscapes across Syria, Palestine, Turkey (Asia Minor), and surrounding regions. The text by John Carne provides historical and descriptive commentary to accompany the views. The engravings, many by William Finden and others, helped define the 19th-century British imagination of the Holy Land and the Near East.
Three quarto volumes. Each half leather bound over cloth with gilt titles and ornament to spines. All edges gilt. 80, 76 and 100pp (4) index; with a total of 120 full-page steel engravings, all with tissue guards, after drawings by Bartlett, Purser, and Allomand . Two maps present in volume three. Small binder's label to each volume (Thomson of Exeter). Small ink stamps of A.E. Tremlett to front endpapers of volumes two and three. Occasional light foxing to borders.
