1844 printed circular with notes, Meriden, April 12, 1844, mailed  on the 16th to Deacons Samuel B. & Charles Wheeler, North Stonington Conn. “A CRISIS in the history of slavery is hastening.” Printed by the Liberty State Central Committee, S. M. Booth, Chairman - who adds “P.S. Please answer this before the first of May. The Annual Meeting  & the Liberty State Convention are to be held here (Meriden) the 15th & 16th of May. Provision to entertain free of cost has been made for all who attend. Give us a delegation from North Stonington, S. M. Booth” The crisis is the application for admission to the Union of Texas as a slave state. Stonington is being asked for $5 to support the anti-slavery Liberty group. “What say you, brother Abolitionist? Who will go for Birney and Liberty?” Sherman Miller Booth (1812-1904)was a very active anti-slavery lecturer and promoter of the Liberty Party; in 1848 he relocated to Wisconsin, and would be instrumental in founding the Republican Party in 1854.
