1873 to 1883 five letters to George C. McVean at different Michigan locales. George Clark McVean was born in 1852 in Caledonia NY, mother Jane Major Clark and father John Creighton McVean. He died in Caledonia in 1952. (1) July 20, 1873, from Caledonia NY addressed to Kalamazoo and forwarded to Grand Rapids, from his mother Jane Major. Sister Mary is very ill with a hemorrhage; hay and buckwheat are fine, potatoes as large as goose eggs. (2) May 21, 1878, from Caledonia NY to Kalamazoo from his sister Mary. Barley sown, seed potatoes; a melodeon; other local news (3) February 3, 1880 from Caledonia NY, no envelope, from his brother Will. Typhoid fever; friends with a new side bar and a new cutter; clover threshers, a local farm offered for $9,500 the owner wanting to move to Kansas; 103 tickets sold to a Masonic dance and masquerade; bought clothes in the city and plans to go to writing school. (4) February 16, 1880 from Martin MI to Centerville MI from Cousin Belle. Poor roads; Presbyterian Donation followed by a Methodist Social; Temperance meetings; Lyceum flourishing; $5 for chopping wood. (5) April 11, 1883, from Centerville MI to Calendonia NY from Cousin Laurie Jane. Working at mill and suffering from a corn poisoned with medicine so has to wear an old slipper of Ike’s who is still at the mill; wants him to send some old neckties and other scraps of silk or satin or velvet for the quilt she is making.
