1840s stock certificate for The Atlas Mining Company of Lake Superior. Engraving has enlarged the lake to dominate the face of the globe, pointed to by an astonished Atlas. Copper was discovered in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and, after the 1843 treaty with the Ojibwe (illsutrated here) investors rushed the area. The Cliff Mine was the first success in 1845. Whether the Atlas Mine ever sold stock is unknown. 10”x9”
