Item Details

Vienna, Austro-Hungarian Army Post Office, 1915 (used in), Postcard

Very good

Flimsy Feldpost (free-franked military mail) postcard. Added ink stamp of the K. u. K.  Gebirgsartillerieregiment / Gebirgshaubitz (mountain artillery regiment. mountain howitzers+. In lieu of  a message, the soldier drew on the message side a scene at once amusing and frightening of combat in the Alto Adige or South Tyrol, where Italy and Austria fought inconclusively for years. A soldier is wielding an axe rather than a weapon on the right side. To the left an Italian in the typical headgear of Italian alpine troops  is peering out from behind rocks, rifle in hand.  In the upper left an eagle is making off with a sheep. The option for "Sender" appears on the address side in seven languages. Field post office cancellation dated in September, 1915.
