New York, 1921, Wrappers
Very good
Wrappers. Souvenir program with a very spiffy cover for a fundraiser performance whose cast was probably amateur. The book was written by the traditionally named "Mrs. Mark Emanuel," and we have been unable to trace her personal name. Beneficiaries of the performance were reported in an announcement in the New York Times as the Spring Valley Home for Blind and Crippled Children and the Blind Jewish Children of Brooklyn. Adele Emanuel, the author's daughter, played the role of Margie Delamore. The song hit Margie was published in 1920 and has no relation to the play, but it must have been in the air (and ear) at the time. As usual with such publications, the sponsor ads add a social-historical dimension to the proceedings. The venues indicate Mrs. Emanuel was a person of some standing, so much so that when Adele eloped in 1927 it was reported in the New York Times. Mother and daughter were then living in the Ansonia Hotel, having returned from California, where Adele was apparently trying to break into the movies.
