Fort H. G. Wright, Fisher's Island, New York, 1900 (ca.)., Photograph mounted on a card
Very good
There have been several Fort Wrights in US history; this Fort Wright is Fort H. G. Wright, which was set up in 1898 on Fisher's Island in Long Island Sound. That identifcation is cemented conclusively by the mention of New London in the doggerel poem at the bottom of the broadside. Fort Wright began to be manned in 1900, when roller skating was still a very popular pastime. It seems that a comical broadside about the club with references to specific persons was created, and the heavy-handed humor of the broadside was further memorialized in a photograph that visitors could take away. A sizable Army post would likely have had a print shop able to handle both tasks. The Henry L. Feruson Museum, devoted to Fisher's Island, has on its site a photograph taken in 1902 of the fort's Officer's Row; a standing figure in the photograph is wearing an identical-looking jacket and cap to the one in miltiary dress in the cartoon.
