London, David Bogue, 1848, Decorative cloth
Original editions, Fine
Four volumes in two. Publisher's embossed cloth. 12mo. Fine copies, single-number shelf labels on spine, one partially removed. Frontispieces to each volume by William Harvey. Published originally in parts. One volume combines Inventors and Discoverers and Pictures and Painters, the other combines Anecdotes of the Electric Telegraph and Popular Authors. In terms of sequence, an advertisement in the Electric Telegraph/Popular Authors selection indicates that the Electric Telegraph appeared first, then Popular Authors, then Inventors and Discoverers, while Pictures and Painters was still to appear. The first-mentioned book has title pages and frontispieces for each volume, with a tissue guard over the frontispiece for Pictures and Painters. Popular Authors has a frontispiece but no separate title page. Each volume includes dozens to hundreds of anecdotes on the given topic. The tone is gossipy but practically all the important figures of the time make appearances, e.g., Babbage, Faraday, Cuvier, Humphrey Davy, Franklin, Newton, Herschel and so on in Inventors and Discoverers. As for authors, one finds Washingtn Irving, Charles Lamb and Coleridge but not yet Dickens. The volumes are further distinguished by their excellent condition Bindings are fresh and clean. There is a 1992 pencil ownership inscription in one of the volumes.
