Item Details

London, Churchill, 1846-1847, Wrappers

Two of three issues published of a short-lived journal devoted to the latest discoveries in paleontology. Original wrappers, with informative content preserved on the wrappers in the form of notices of new books and offerings from fossil dealers. Cover vignette of a mammoth jaw on both issues. The editor nowhere refers to himself by name, and perhaps it was obvious to contemporaries. He was Edward Charlesworth, a sort of outsider figure in London geological circles. He mentions that the appearance of the journal was delayed by his taking up a "provincial scientific post"; Charlesworth became keeper of the Yorkshire Museum in 1844. The magazine included descriptions of new vertebrate and invertebrate fossils with other editorial content. Exceptional care was taken with the lithographic plates, some of which are folding life-size depictions. Condition overall good with wear to spines and foxing to the plates. Rear wrapper of no. 3 detached. Modern owner's name label on front blank of first issue and small neatly written name of the same person on the same page of the third issue. As to be expected of this early period in paleontology, the emphasis was on pure description.
