One of the finest Russian periodicals devoted to art in the early 20th century. The magazine was published for seven years, from 1901 to 1907. A total of 84 issues were released, divided into seven annual volumes. The editors of the magazine at various times were the artist A. N. Benois and the art historian A. V. Prakhov. The journal’s mission was the systematic promotion of Russian cultural monuments and the introduction of private art collections to the public.
The design of Art Treasures of Russia involved some of the most prominent Russian artists of the early 20th century — Lanceray, Bakst, Dobuzhinsky, Somov, and Benois. The magazine featured reproductions of works of painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative and applied arts, and artistic industry of the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, accompanied by detailed descriptions.
Articles based on archival materials explored the art of the Peter the Great era. Special thematic issues were devoted to the Armory Chamber, the monuments of Peterhof, Oranienbaum, and Tsarskoye Selo, the Stroganov Palace, and the Hermitage’s Treasure Gallery.
Art Treasures of Russia also introduced readers to works from private collections, previously unknown to the general public. The magazine included an Alphabetical Index of Names and a Subject Index of Illustrations, and each issue concluded with a chronicle of cultural life.
