This is a first Russian edition of "Orbis Sensualium Pictus" (The Visible World) by Johann Amos Comenius (1592–1670), often considered the first children’s picture book and a foundational work in modern pedagogy.
Book in multiple languages: Latin, German, Italian, French, and Russian. Printed at the Imperial Moscow University in 1768. Size: 21x13.5 cm. [22], 477, 27 pp. Damaged fuĺ leather cover and heavy mold on last 60 pages. Bookwarm holes. Lacks to title.
It’s a very significant historical piece in the history of education and multilingual learning.
The author of the book, Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670), was a famous Czech humanist educator, writer, public figure, and the founder of scientific pedagogy, renowned for his innovative theoretical and applied pedagogical works. The Visible World is the work of a mature scholar who understood how important it is, especially in language learning, to engage both verbal-logical and visual memory, to accompany the word with an image, and the text with an illustration. Nevertheless, in the Russian edition there are no pictures, since the publisher believed it was better to do without them altogether than to include “poorly carved wooden figures” in the book.
