NY, E. P. Dutton, 1952, Illustrated boards
An unusual set of very late printings [October 1952] but with each volume inscribed by one of the three actors.
Winnie-the-Pooh, inscribed by Paul Newman “For Pamela in anticipation of a brilliant child.”
The House at Pooh Corner, inscribed by Newman’s first wife Jackie Newman [nee Witte] “To Pamela, a future reference”
When We Were Very Young, signed “from Joanne Woodward”
The two Pooh volumes are inscribed by Paul and Jackie Newman with the same black fountain pen, not dated but apparently while the two were still married in the early 1950s. When We Were Very Young is inscribed by Joanne Woodward, with blue ink, in August 1953. Although ‘Pamela’ is not identified, because of the NY theatrical connections we speculate that it may have been Pamela Prince Walker, later the author of Seven Steps to Children’s Theater Dramatics [Hill and Wang, 1957]
Paul Newman first met Joanne Woodward in 1953, as the two appeared in the Broadway production of Picnic. Around that time, Jackie Newman left acting to raise the Newmans’ three children. Newman met Woodward again in 1957, the two became lovers, and Paul left Jackie and married Joanne in 1958.
