Woonsocket [RI]: Patriot Steam Printing House, 1870, Stapled wrappers
First thus, Fair
Charter of the Woonsocket Fire Corporation
1st thus. 8vo, 9.5”x5.5”; stitched wrappers. 15[1] pp.
First chartered in 1836, this printing includes the newly adopted Rules and Regulations of the Fire Department adopted Dec 13, 1869 as well as the original Charter, Bylaws, and list of officers for both 1836 and 1869.
The loosely organized nature of Woonsocket - three villages in Smithfield and three villages in Cumberland -- made it necessary to receive special authority from the state to organize a fire department. Major fires in 1829 and 1835 had emphasized to the mill owners in the area the need to prepare against future fires. In 1836, the Rhode Island General Assembly granted a charter establishing the Fire Corporation of the Woonsocket Falls Village. In 1869 the village of Woonsocket was incorporated as the Woonsocket Fire Corporation.
CONDITION: FAIR; covers soiled and partially split; corners rubbed and chipped. The interior pages are very good with no foxing, occasional edge wear; one inked correction. Ownership of Herbert f. Keith handwritten on front cover.
