The Laws and Resolutions Passed at the Annual Council of the Hawaiian Nobles and Representatives convened according to the Constitution, at Lahaina, April, 1843
Lahainaluna: Seminary Press, 1843. 1st and only edition. [But also issued in Hawaiian] Unbound, 6 pp. Approx. 7x4½"
In April 1843, the Annual Council of the Hawaiian Nobles and Representatives convened at Lahaina to pass new laws and resolutions, as required by the recently enacted Hawaiian constitution. The new acts had to be submitted for approval to the British commission that exercised temporary control over Hawaii between February and July 1843, as noted in the penultimate paragraph, "All the foregoing laws... will take effect after being communicated to the British Commission, and proclaimed at each of the principal islands..."
Forbes. Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900, No.1393. "A supplement to the Constitution and Laws. This contains ten laws and resolutions signed [in type] by the king (Kamehameha III) and premier (Kekauluohi) 'This twenty eighth day of April, in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three, at the council house at Luaehu, Lahaina, Maui, Sandwich Islands.'"
Condition: Good+. Moderately foxed throughout, slight paper loss in upper margin and gutter.
Quite rare – none in OCLC; none currently online. Four institutional libraries have copies of a ‘photo-facsimile’ reprint published in 1913 and limited to fifty copies. [Washington, Statute Law Book Co.] We have found only two auction records of recent vintage – both at PBA Galleries and both with similar paper loss in the gutter. This copy has somewhat more foxing than the 2020 sale [$2500] but without the significant damp-stain that marred another copy in 2021 [$1200].
