Item Details

Sagaponack NY, Peter Matthiessen, 1972, Loose leaf

First draft typescript for an unpublished and unproduced film about migrant farmworkers in the San Joaquin Valley of California.  A fictional treatment exploring some of the labor issues Matthiessen explored in his sojourns with Cesar Chavez and his 1969 nonfiction chronicle about Chavez and the UFW, Sal Si Puedes.

86 typescript pages, 8-1/2"x11" with a duplicate final page in carbon containing two holographic corrections by Matthiessen and handwritten delivery instructions to his Hollywood agent.  Together with a brief handwritten note two decades later concerning the commissioning of the work and that it might still be optioned.  This screenplay is not mentioned in any of the Matthiessen bibliographies nor biographical annotations in other works.
