Friedan's 'The Feminine Mystique' is often credited with kicking off 'second wave' feminism-- Friedan wrote about the social issues of womens lives: workplace equality, birth control, abortion, and women’s education. Friedan's book tapped into middle-class American women's dissatisfactions...with their lives, the routine of mid-century domestic life, house chores and caring for children. Her book also addressed women's discontent with ingrained societal sexism which limited womens opportunities to work or gain admittance to schools. After writing 'The Feminine Mystique', in 1986 Betty Friedan went on to co-found NOW (the National Organization for Women).
