Beginning in the 1880s and continuing over a 55 years' long career, Luther Burbank developed 800+ strains and varieties of plants-- his fame came after saving America's potato crops from a deadly blight; this work established Burbank's notoriety as a major influence in American botany, horticulture and agricultural science. Burbank's plant studies led him to support and proselytize the social philosophy of 'Eugenics', a dominant social concept in the 1800s-1900s (its many advocates included Pres. Woodrow Wilson and Margaret Sanger, the birth-control activist).
