Post-1950s Printing. --SHANGHAI ADVERTISING POSTER-- tin end strips, approx. 19.5 x 30.75 inches-- nice collectible condition.
1920s-30s Shanghai advertising posters are a distinct genre of design-- once thought sloppy and unconventional by Western standards, these works of advertising art are now a cultural treasure. Originally intended as ephemeral promotions for the vast array of products which flooded China’s forcibly opened economy, these advertising posters have had a lasting design influence on the region. Vintage Chinese advertising posters combine Oriental and Occidental styles, influenced by Chinese art of late 1880s and Art Nouveau & Art Deco of the 1880s-1920s.
Shanghai was ground zero for varied (and often risqué) advertisement posters of the 1920s.
