JAPANESE PERSIMMONS by Henry Evans, 1965.

Signed by the artist in pencil, titled and dated “JAPANESE PERSIMMONS” /  “Henry Evans 1965”

Original botanical linocut print hand pressed by the artist on a textured ecru handmade paper in San Francisco.
Dimensions of the sheet are 19” x 14”. NEAR FINE Condition: two light corner-tip creases not affecting the image which is bright, vibrant, clean and crisp. An excellent example of one of Henry Evans early and ellusive prints. Only two holdings in OCLC collections worldwide, Hunt Botanical Library Collection, PA. and Morton Arboretum, IL.

Henry Evans (1918-1990) San Francisco Bay Area artist and printmaker known for his minimalist style botanical images. In 1949 he established the Peregrine Press in San Francisco where he began making books and prints for local Bay Area artists. To better understand the process of block printing, he began to cut his own linoleum block prints and drew inspiration for his images from the flora of northern California. His images of living plants were drawn directly onto the linoleum block, depicting them life-size.
