Beverly Hills, CA:, Castle Rock Entertainment,, 1991, Studio-issued glossy pictorial cardstock folder
Unique Ephemera, Very Good to Fine
BEFORE THE PREMIERE.
Issued in advance of the June 7, 1991 theatrical release, this original studio press kit documents the promotional campaign for City Slickers, the acclaimed comedy starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby, Helen Slater, Patricia Wettig, and Academy Award-winner Jack Palance. Prepared by Castle Rock Entertainment for journalists, broadcasters, and film critics, the kit presents the film exactly as it was introduced to the media before its national release.
MARKETING A MODERN CLASSIC.
Far more than a collection of publicity photographs, the archive provides a comprehensive snapshot of Hollywood studio marketing in the early 1990s.
Alongside eight original Bruce McBroom publicity stills are production notes, cast and crew biographies, promotional correspondence, localized press distribution material, a promotional bookmark, and a Boston-area WBCN radio advance screening pass.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Studio-issued glossy pictorial cardstock folder with two interior pockets, measuring approximately 9 by 12 inches.
CONTENTS INCLUDE:
+++ Twenty-one-page single-sided production notes.
+++Six-page cast and production crew listing.
+++ Eight original glossy 8 × 10 black-and-white publicity sheets by Bruce McBroom, reproducing fifteen production photographs with printed captions.
+++Cinema Specialties press kit transmittal letter.
+++Cinema Specialties press list update questionnaire.
+++Promotional color bookmark reproducing the theatrical artwork.
+++WBCN 104.1 FM 'Admit Two' advance screening ticket for the June 4, 1991 preview at Circle Cinemas, Brookline, Massachusetts.
Production sheets are professionally prepared in studio typewriter-style format on white letter-size paper. Publicity stills carry Castle Rock Entertainment and City Slickers identification with descriptive captions and photographer credit. Folder features full-color illustrated artwork adapted from the theatrical advertising campaign.
CONDITION: The original pictorial folder remains structurally sound with light handling wear, scattered edge creasing, minor rubbing to the glossy laminate, and modest corner wear consistent with studio distribution and storage.
The internal production material is exceptionally well preserved. The production notes, cast lists, transmittal letter, screening pass, questionnaire, and promotional bookmark remain crisp, clean, and uncreased.
All six original publicity stills retain strong photographic contrast with bright surfaces and sharp image definition. No pinholes, tape residue, corner creases, or editorial markings observed. Overall a particularly clean and complete example of a studio-issued press kit.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: HOW HOLLYWOOD SOLD THE MOVIE!
This press kit preserves the complete promotional identity of City Slickers before audiences encountered the film itself. Intended solely for reviewers, newspapers, broadcasters, and entertainment editors, studio press kits such as this were working tools rather than commercial merchandise, and many were discarded after theatrical release.
CASTLE ROCK'S BREAKTHROUGH YEARS.
Released in 1991, City Slickers became one of Castle Rock Entertainment's defining commercial successes. Billy Crystal's original concept, Ron Underwood's direction, and Jack Palance's Academy Award-winning performance combined traditional Western imagery with contemporary comedy, creating one of the era's most recognizable American films.
PRIMARY CINEMA EPHEMERA.
Complete studio press kits offer a documentary record of how motion pictures were presented to the media before release. Production notes, cast biographies, publicity photography, localized screening invitations, and distributor correspondence reveal the mechanics of film promotion in an era before digital press rooms replaced printed promotional packages. As complete surviving examples become less common, they have become increasingly desirable within the fields of Hollywood memorabilia, studio archives, and motion picture ephemera.
