Original Studio Press Kit, Fine Contents; Light Wear to Folder
Original studio publicity material for Crossroads, Walter Hill's blues-centered film starring Ralph Macchio, Joe Seneca, and Jami Gertz. The packet combines ten captioned photographic stills with twenty pages of production information, preserving the materials distributed by Columbia Pictures to promote the film.
The photographs follow the film from Eugene Martone's search for a lost blues song through his journey south with veteran bluesman Willie Brown, with images of Macchio, Seneca, and Gertz as well as a production portrait of director Walter Hill.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: TEN ORIGINAL 8 × 10 STILLS WITH TWENTY PAGES OF PRODUCTION MATERIAL.
CONDITION: FINE CONTENTS; LIGHT WEAR TO THE ORIGINAL FOLDER.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: BLUES LEGEND, ROBERT JOHNSON, AND THE CROSSROADS BROUGHT TO HOLLYWOOD.
Released in 1986, Crossroads follows a young Juilliard guitarist into the Mississippi Delta in pursuit of a supposedly lost Robert Johnson song, using the crossroads legend and the history of Delta blues as the foundation for a contemporary road movie. The film was directed by Walter Hill from John Fusco's screenplay, with music by Ry Cooder.
The production materials are particularly useful for documenting how Columbia Pictures presented the film to the press: Ralph Macchio's youthful star appeal is placed alongside Joe Seneca's portrayal of an older bluesman, while the photographs repeatedly emphasize guitars, performance, the Southern landscape, and the journey toward the crossroads.
