Original Color Photograph, Matted
Original Photograph, Fine
An original color performance photograph of saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, a founding member of the influential Art Ensemble of Chicago, by noted music photographer Tom Copi.
Bathed in vivid red stage lighting, Mitchell is captured in a moment of intense concentration, playing soprano saxophone. The dramatic lighting, dark background, and close composition make this an especially appealing portrait of one of the leading figures in experimental jazz.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: AN ORIGINAL TOM COPI COLOR PHOTOGRAPH.
+++ Original color photographic print, approximately 9 × 6.5 inches, professionally matted to 13.25 × 10.75 inches in a blue-gray window mat with a narrow gold-toned inner border.
+++ The verso bears Copi's ink copyright stamp, dated 1980, with his San Francisco studio address and publication-rights notice.
CONDITION: FINE. The photograph presents beautifully, with strong color, clean surfaces, and no visible fading or significant flaws. The mat shows minor handling wear. The photograph has not been examined outside its mount. [Shadowing is from listing photograph]
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE — GREAT BLACK MUSIC: ANCIENT TO THE FUTURE
THE ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO AND THE AACM.

The ensemble's motto, 'Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future,' expressed its commitment to drawing upon African American musical traditions while continually pushing jazz into new territory.
