7 3/8 x 9 3/8". Original platinum photograph by Rinehart of Afraid of Eagle a Sioux Indian. 1898. Omaha, Neb. Some damage to upper left corner and a small water stain to the bottom left. Incredibly rich dark tones and a sharp unfaded image. Afraid of Eagle is profiled from his waist up with decorated sash and vest and a great eagle feather head dress. Rinehart took this photo at the 1898 Indian Congress in Omaha. Afraid of Eagle (Wabli Kokipapi) (1828-1903?) was an important Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux warrior and leader. He was present at the Battle of Little Big Horn and later fled to Canada with Sitting Bull. He returned to the US and surrendered with Chief Rain in the Face. Eventually he was settled in the Standing rock Reservation in North Dakota. The 1898 Indian Congress took place during the TransMississippi World's Fair and gathered 500 Indians from 35 tribes who performed tribal dances and demonstrations. Rinehart set up a studio and took what are considered some of the most dignified and important images of Native Americans before the 20th century started.
