Item Details

London, Methuen & Co., 1905

8vo. 151 pp. Decorative bookplate for "John Taylor Bottomley", a prominent surgeon and veteran of the Spanish-American War. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt design and lettering in near fine condition.

De Profundis was the letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to his friend and lover Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas. Wilde wrote the piece over the period of two years and when complete he entrusted the handwritten manuscript to Robert Ross (another former lover, loyal friend, and rival to "Bosie"). Ross, Wilde's 'literary executor,' published the letter in 1905, five years after Wilde's death.
