Printed broadside (12 1/2" x 9 3/4", framed) for Pomfret, CT. Faint fold lines; not examined out of frame. Although we have located instances of thief detecting societies in other areas, such as Northampton, Worcester, Charlestown, Warren, Norfolk, and Bristol, we find no example of such a society in Pomfret; rare thus.
Includes names of the Officers, Auditors, Pursuers, Prudential Committee, and Members. Thief detecting societies were common in New England, particularly in the 18th & 19th centuries, when formal law enforcement was limited. These groups were often formed by local communities to protect property, especially horses, from theft.
