San Francisco, Printed by Schmidt Lithography, 1927
Color lithograph pictorial map (26 1/5" x 33 1/2"). The map is in fine condition; colors are bright and strong. Included with the map is the recently published biography of Harrison Godwin written (and SIGNED) by his grandson, William Godwin titled "Zip" Godwin: A Carmel Caricature".
One of the most attractive cartographs of San Francisco of the period even then touted as "The City That Knows How" and "The Ideal Convention City." William Harrison Godwin (1899 - 1984) moved from the east coast to Carmel circa 1915 when he and his brother, Fred, came to help their aunt run the La Playa Hotel. Subsequent to her death in 1922, they took over full management of the hotel. It was during this period that Harrison created three pictorial maps, the first being this map of San Francisco. His other two maps were of Hollywood and of North & Central America. In 1940, Harrison purchased the Pine Inn in Carmel. Each of his maps tell many local stories accompanied by charming and whimsical drawings.
