Russell Amos Kirk (1918 – 1994) was an American political philosopher, moralist, historian, social critic, literary critic, and novelist who influenced 20th century American conservatism. Although best known as the author of "The Conservative Mind", Kirk considered himself a writer of ghostly tales. "Old House of Fear", his first novel, is a twentieth-century Gothic suspense set on the remote Hebridean island of Carnglass off the coast of Scotland and is arguably his most commercially successful and critically acclaimed fictional work. Washington Post book critic Michael Dirda called Kirk “the greatest American author of ghostly tales in the classic style, at least of the post–World War II era."
