Item Details

San Jose, CAL., Garden City Bazaar, ca. 1870s

This non-folding fan has color illustrated cardstock (8" x 6") attached to a short wood handle. The illustration is of the Mausoleum, at Halicarnassus, Asia Minor, erected as a tomb for Mausolus, King of Caria, 353 B.C. "Compliments of Garden City Bazaar, San Jose, CAL" printed above the image. On the verso is a stamped image of an owl with text about Garden City Bazaar and the types of products they offered. The Proprietors were Seaward & Seaward. The Bazaar's address was 180-182 South First Street, San Jose, CAL. Our research does not find any mention of this early business in downtown San Jose. Minor wear; light spotting; fold/crease at top of wood handle created by fanning motion; else near fine.
