Hand colored lithograph portrait of George and Lillian Henschel with original music surrounding portrait. Signed Mr. and Mrs. B J Lang from Lillian and George Henschel (1850-1934). George was the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His wife, Lillian was a singer who performed at many of Henschel's concerts in both the US and England. Presented to Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Lang, Feb 18, 1884. B.J. Lang (1837 -1909 is considered one of the most influential figures in Boston's musical history. He was conductor of the Boston Symphony in 1884 when the gift was presented and received.
A rare and very special item in the musical history world of Boston. Provenance goes from the Henschel's to the Lang's and then on Mr. Lang's death to his daughter who archived many of his papers, etc. At some point, a number of items were given to the Boston Public Library and the Boston Symphony. The provenance is lost at this point (de-assentation is assumed) until acquired by the current seller around 3-4 years ago.
