The Alaska Packers Association was founded in San Francisco in 1891 and incorporated in 1892 after a year of successfully selling a surplus of canned salmon.  Henry Frederick Fortmann (1856-1946), who was born in San Francisco, served as the Association’s president from 1892 until 1922, and remained on the board for several years after.  The secretary who signed this certificate, A. K. Tichenor, was later named a president of the Association.  W. G. Fortmann, who received the transfer of the certificate from Anna Fortmann, was a successful insurance man in Portland, Oregon.

The Alaska Packers Association quickly became the largest salmon packing / cannery operation in Alaska, and remained a successful company until post-World War II when a number of circumstances, including lower salmon runs, reduced its net returns.  An interesting side note is that the Association, along with several other companies, in the early part of the 20th century, banded together to form a group that dealt in the canning and marketing of vegetables and fruit – which became known as Del Monte.
