[THEATRE]  [DRAMA]  [UNCLE TOM’S CABIN]  [BROADSIDE]  [PLAYBILL]  Attractively printed broadside or large handbill that served as the Programme for a performance of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, including a cast of characters and the scenes of each of the five acts of the play (no place: no publisher noted, no date).

Printed on one side only on colored paper, the handbill measures 12 x 7 inches; all text is within an ornate border.  Corner crease at lower right; ¼ inch closed tear at top edge outside the printed border, just left of center.  Horizontal fold line across the piece at mid-point that has caused some wrinkling.  Clean and bright; VG condition.  [26-1041]

An undated playbill for a theatre performance based on H. B. Stowe’s classic book Uncle Tom’s Cabin.  Design and typography appear to this researcher as being from around the turn of the 20th century, rather to when the book and play was most popular during the mid-19th century.  Unfortunately, no location is noted for the play, nor is there any printer’s note.  That might suggest that it was printed to be distributed along the tour route of a drama troupe performing the play from town to town.  However, there are five actors in the cast with the last name Wolfe (A. D., Frank, Kenneth, Lizzie and Etta) which might also suggest it was a local theatre group putting on the performance.  Other cast members were H. D. LaFever (Uncle Tom), G. E. Peebles, H. H. Danford, G. W. Antle, Rhea Hambleton (Topsy), Sylvia Cary (Eva), Blanche Moody, Myrta Alderman, and Cora White.  The name D. W. Border is printed between descriptions of the various scenes within four of the five acts.  A researcher with patience might be able to match up many of those names to a particular community or troupe.
