Born in England, where he converted to Mormonism, Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) was a photographer in Brooklyn, NY and Council Bluffs, Iowa, before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1860. He quickly became one of the more prolific photographers of the developing American West and its variety of landscapes. He photographed the meeting of the rails at Promontory Point in 1869 and in the 1870s traveled extensively around the West taking photographs.
These two stereoviews are characteristic of his work documenting the new railroad lines connecting the West with the rest of the United States. Each view is titled in the mount below the right-side image: “Rock Cut, above Alta” and “American River, from Cape Horn”.
