NEW YORK, NY, MAYER, MERKEL & OTTMANN LITH., 1877
This member's ticket was printed for the German Liederkranz Fancy Dress Ball to be held at the Academy of Music in New York City as part of the 1877 Carnival celebration.
The two-sided ticket was drawn by political cartoonist and creator of Puck Magazine Joseph Keppler. The images include caricatures of political figures and cultural icons of the time, including Hayes, Tilden, Boss Tweed, Peter Cooper, Wagner, and Offenbach, as well as references to the Centennial and the Whiskey Ring scandal.
An article about the event appeared in the January 28, 1877, issue of the New York Times. It explains the upcoming event and provides a detailed description of this elaborate ticket. I have included a scan of that article.
4 5/8" x 5 3/4" - printed on heavy card stock by Mayer, Merkel & Ottmann and in very good condition. The registration marks in the side margins suggest that this might have been a printer's proof.
