Baalbek, Magazin Oriental, ca. 1930s, Loose photographs together with 20 unrelated Jerusalem halftones in printed folder..

[RUINS OF BAALBEK]. Magazin Oriental. 20 Vraies Photos de Baalbek [Cover Title]. 20 black and white original photographs (2 5/8 × 3 ½ most are in landscape format) numbered at the bottom right; single sheet of heavy buff paper, 4¾ × 11½ inches, folded to 4½   × 3 inches; first fold cut with oval hole to exhibit photograph, second fold forms a pocket for the insertion of the remainder of the photographs;  there is  printed list of subjects on the on the outside of the pocket, repeated on the folded back cover. Case show some wear with small separations at spine extremities. There is a pencil date (British style) on the inside “26/5/40” (May 26, 1940) which would tally with the original owner’s visits to Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Cyprus, (from her home base in Jerusalem) as the Representative of the Combined Red Cross and Order of St John’s. She was responsible for the Management of all British Army Officers’ Convalescent Homes in those countries during WWII (The British entered WWII in September 3, 1939. She was Mentioned in Dispatches for this and for her work in Palestine where she was also the County Secretary for the Joint War Operation.

SOLD WITH A group of eleven sepia halftones, on paper glazed to trick the purchaser into thinking they were original photographs.  (2 3/8 × 3 ½ inches, numbered and titled in print on the versos “25 JERUSALEM—35. JERUSALEM. Most are in landscape format. Not priced included only to show development of the City since the 1940s.
