INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper by James: “For | Bradford and Lobelia Bishop | with the best wishes of André |and Edward James.”
William Bradford Bishop (1903-1969) was a Petroleum Geologist. Tragically, his wife Lobelia was to be murdered in March 1976 by their son, William Bradford Bishop, Jr.. together with their daughter-in-law, and three grandsons. The André mentioned in the inscription was André Breton the Surrealist who went to Mexico in 1938 when James was in the midst of constructing his fabulous, and most eccentric, gardrn.
