Toyko, Printing Museum, 2023, Paper
New
292 pages. Numerous illustrations, some in color, and including fold-out plates. Kazumasa Ogawa (aka Kazuma or Isshin) (1860 to 1929) was a photographer active in the later half of the Meiji era (1868 to 1912): he differed from other photographers in that he not only took photographs, but created and published many works in collotype and half-tone. The present first-rate exhibition catalogue covers the huge range of his publications---but while very extensive, is not comprehensive. Nevertheless, it is valuable for recording many publications rarely seen. Unfortunately for most English-speakers, the text is almost entirely in Japanese.
