List of base camp participants; photo-pictorial white wrappers; copiously illustrated with black & white photographs, pencil, and ink drawings, including cartoons; maps. Laid in at page 57, is 6. 75" x 9.5" original ink drawing of a mountain scene on rice paper by Chiura Obata, date Aug. 1951. He is not mentioned with the many artists mentioned in the credits, so this appears to be an added piece by previous owner. " Also signed by him again on the writing paper he is holding in the photograph.

Toning along top edge and leading edge front cover, with a bit of stain to lower corner portion. Binding solid, interior clean.

The book documents the 1954 Sierra Club Base Camp outings, held in three different locations: Bear Creek, Whitney-Crabtree, and Oregon Base Camps. There are numerous articles documenting the experiences of camp participants and the surrounding environments. Oliver Kehrlein, was a significant figure in the history of outdoor recreation and conservation in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born in 1888, he was known for his contributions as a prominent member of the Sierra Club, an environmental organization. Kehrlein played a crucial role in promoting the preservation and enjoyment of natural landscapes, particularly through his work on trails and parks. Chiura Obata (1885-1975) was an influential American artist who was born and educated in Japan. Obata taught at Berkeley from 1932 to 1954, a period broken only by his unjust internment during WWII.
