Opened as a junior college in 1918, Highland Park evolved into a small community college serving a primarily African-American population in this enclave of Detroit until its closure in 1996. This coloring book is comprised of drawings by 15 students as part of an Art History research project, & was edited by their teacher, Detroit painter, collagist, & poet, Cyril Miles (1918-1993). The drawings represent the traditional, tribal arts of Africa, including ceremonial & dance masks; funerary figures; carved household items & housing fixtures; brass, wood, & ivory figures; paintings; talismans Suggestions are offered for using the book in social studies, art, science, & literature courses. Decorative black-and-white wrappers, stapled binding, 48 unnumbered pages. Condition is Near Fine: completely clean & unmarked inside, with modest rubbing to extremities & parallel to spine on front cover.
