Item Details

DC Comics, Nov. 1970, stapled wrappers

First Edition, Near Fine

with its hand on the cultural pulse of the era & the burgeoning civil rights movement, DC Comics launched this ground-breaking & highly controversial comic book in Nov. 1970. Issue No. 106 of DC Comic’s Lois Lane series, in which intrepid reporter for the Daily Planet, Lois Lane, decides to address the raging racial tensions of the era by becoming a Black woman. At her boyfriend Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, she enters the Plastimold Machine (invented by a surgeon on Superman’s home planet, Krypton) &, when Superman pulls the switch of the “transformoflux pack” emerges with dark skin sporting an Afro hairstyle. She then explores life as a minority woman & confronts all the prejudices of the times, even challenging Superman, “Would you marry me even if I’m black, an outsider in a white man’s world?”

The second story in this issue features another installment in the “Rose and the Thorn” saga (begun in book #    & getting their own comic in     ). In yet another milestone, this issue reflected the groundswell of second-wave feminism with two additional features: “Wonder Women in History” (2-page spread) & a single-page tribute to “Women of Distinction.”

Very scarce, especially in Near Fine condition like this one. It was in my personal collection since purchased brand new in 1970.  Very slight rubbing to extremities, staples bright with no rust. Pages moderately tanned, heavier to edges, but supple & completely unmarked. Bagged in clear archival mylar & boarded.
