JOURNALS OF THE HON. WILLIAM HERVEY IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE, from 1755 to 1814, with Order Books at Montreal, 1760-63, with Memoir and Notes. Edited by S. H. A Hervey. Suffolk Green Books No. 14, Bury St. Edmund's, 1906. Octavo, green cloth with gilt lettering; pp. lxxvi, 548, map, 10 plates of portraits and 4 illus. in text. Some edgewear to the binding, the contents bright and clean. William Hervey (1732-1815) was the 4th and youngest son of John, Lord Hervey of Suffolk. In 1755, he obtained a commission as ensign in the 44th Regiment of Foot, with which he had already sailed to America as a gentleman-volunteer. Following Braddock's defeat, he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1756, to captain. This 1906 compilation by a descendant, consists of a transcription of his journals, kept from 1755-1815 in 58 small notebooks, along with his orderly books kept during his American service. The North American ournals begin with his service attached to Shirley's Regiment during the 1755 New York campaign and continues through the fall of Montreal in 1760 and concludes with his return to England from Canada in 1763. An extremely rare work, it still remains largely unknown to most students of the French & Indian War. This particular copy was inscribed and presented by S.H.A. Hervey to Lord Liverpool in 1906 and in addition, correspondence between editor Hervey and Lord Liverpool are also tipped-into the volume between the front cover and end paper.
