[COSTUME]. Walker, George. The Costume of Yorkshire, Illustrated by a Series of Forty Engravings, Being Fac-Similes of Original Drawings. With Descriptions in English and French. Published by Printed by T. Bensley for Longman, Hurt, London, 1814. Descriptive of the Peculiar Dress, Occupation, and Manners of Various Inhabitants of that Extensive and Populous County. Illustrated with a frontispiece and forty hand-colored aquatints by R. and D. Havell after George Walker. First edition; large folio.  In modern green morocco, with raised bands and gilt edging and lettering on the spine. Several of the plates from this work have become iconic depictions of the working classes (including military and mariners), notably those relating to the production of textiles at the start of the industrial age. The best-known image is that of the steam locomotive designed by John Blenkinsop hauling coal at the Middleton colliery. [Abbey Life 432; Colas 3044; Tooley 498].
