'In September, 1904, Mr. O. J. Lehman of Bethania, N. C. discovered among the papers in the Moravian Archives (The German population was very prominent in North Carolina particularly in Mecklenburg, County) the account that at the end of the 1775th year, that in May, June or July, the County of Mecklenburg in North Carolina declared itself free and independent of England. It is signed by Miss. Fries on the inside flyleaf.
