Item Details

[Anonymous]. HARD TIMES & AMERICAN TAXATION. A SONG COMPOSED AT THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. [United States: printers unidentified, first half to mid-nineteenth century.] Two broadsides, measuring approximately 9 × 16 inches and 10 × 16 inches, respectively, each printed on one side within ornamental typographic borders.

An attractive pair of American political and economic song broadsides reflecting two recurring themes in nineteenth-century popular literature: resistance to governmental taxation and the hardships of economic depression.

HARD TIMES: Each stanza outlines how a specific trade or professional figure cheats or takes advantage of ordinary citizens, followed by a variations of the chorus refrain, "In these hard times."

AMERICAN TAXATION: While frequently issued between the Rev. War and the Slaveholders Rebellion, we  have not found any copies with this subtitle, A SONG COMPOSED AT THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR.

Folds, creases, edgewear and foxing.

Provenance: Estate of G. W. Davenport, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
