(Amateur Manuscript Periodical) The American Weekly. “The Fatal Model; or, From Gloom to Sunshine.” Vol. I, No. 1. Bakers River, Conn.: The Mohawk Publishing Company, March 17, 1897. Four pages, 10 × 7 in., entirely in graphite pencil, with hand-drawn cover illustration and decorative lettering.
An extraordinary juvenile or small-town amateur magazine, with serialized fiction (“The Fatal Model,” by Abi S. Jackman) and a teaser for the next number (“Only an Actress; or, Mildred, the Queen of the Stage,” by Wenona Gilman). Even the stated address “Mohawk Publishing Company, Bakers River, Conn.” appears to be a fanciful juvenile imprint.
Light folds, small losses, still very good. A charming example of home-made “publishing” in Gilded-Age Connecticut.
