Lieutenant Luther T. Hutchinson was killed in action on June 14, 1863, at Port Hudson, Louisiana.
To the Memory of Lieut. Luther T. Hutchinson.
Bifolium, approx. 8 x 5 in. Only the first leaf printed; verso and conjugate blank. No imprint. Light soiling, faint dampstain upper right, wear and creasing to lower edge.
Poignant memorial poem for Lieutenant Luther T. Hutchinson, who was killed in action on June 14, 1863, during the Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Composed by “Mary”, the elegy describes Hutchinson’s death on the battlefield, his faith, leadership, and remembrance by comrades. A particularly striking example of wartime grieving and commemoration in verse, with references to “Elysian plain” and “memory’s sacred page.” The phrase “And though in a distant clime he fell, / His remains are resting here” suggests a later repatriation of the body.
Although unsigned and without publication data, the typography and paper suggest a Northern imprint, possibly New York—Hutchinson was from Orleans County, NY.
