WALL STREET HUMOR & FINANCE. The Bond Club New Yorker. New York: Bond Club of New York, May 25, 1928. Original pictorial wrappers, 24 pp. (including wrappers), folio. Original wrappers lightly toned and soiled with moderate wear and creasing.
An uncommon issue of the Bond Club's house magazine, prepared for the Club's Eighth Annual Field Day held on May 25, 1928, just over a year before the Wall Street Crash. Marked "Not For Sale" on the front wrapper, suggesting distribution only to members and invited guests. An article in a banking journal drom 1928 stated: " A Bond Club edition of the New Yorker replaced the Bawl Street Journal this year." (Link)
Illustrated throughout with humorous cartoons, caricatures, satirical sketches, poems, short fiction, advertisements, and society news reflecting the culture of New York's investment banking and securities community during the exuberant final years of the Roaring Twenties. The issue includes the day's complete schedule of golf, tennis, polo, boxing, swimming, and other sporting events; committee listings naming numerous Wall Street firms and executives; financial jokes including a spoof "New York Sock Exchange"; original cartoons by Otto Soglow (later creator of The Little King); a humorous illustration signed "Pete Ames"; and contemporary advertising such as an attractive full-page Three Queens cigarette advertisement. The cover depicts a prosperous financier measuring his expanding waistline, an apt visual commentary on the prosperity—and excess—of the late 1920s.
