San Francisco, Denny, 1870's

Denny (1830-1886). Canvas 27" x 14". Re-lined. 1 small 1/8" loss in sky. Signed lower left.

Denny arrived in San Francisco in 1849 immediately travelling to the mines. He abandoned the prospect of success shortly thereafter returning to San Francisco where he secured employment a a teamster. In 1851 he is listed among the members of the Vigilance Committee. In 1852 he travelled east to Milwaukee to study art under Samuel Marsden Brooks. By 1862 he and Brooks were sharing a studio on Bush street. After contracting Malaria Denny died in Cambria California October 7, 1886.
