281pp. First edition. Near fine. Rear interior hinge splitting(4") but holding fast. Long manuscript presentation by California landscape artist Henry Joseph Breuer (1860-1932). In 1888 he settled in San Francisco as editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and the California Magazine. 1900-1904 he travelled extensively throughout Navajo Country including extended stays in Canyon de Chelly and Chaco Canyon. It was during this period that he became acquainted with Mary Austin.

Dear Hiram:

This book, written by a friend of mine, I give to you for the house of the 'Howards' with my love. No words of mine can tell you so truly of the country  where I have been. A country along the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada's. A country mystery, Charm and Grandeur.

Joe Breuer, Cincinnati, Ohio, July 14, 1904.
